How to Get Around the Amalfi Coast

Want to explore the Amalfi Coast but worried about traffic or the crazy cost of parking? You’ve come to the right place. Visiting the “Divine” without a car is not only possible, but it’s often the smartest choice for a relaxing trip.

Why avoid the car on the Amalfi Coast?

The famous Amalfi Coast Highway 163 is a masterpiece of engineering, suspended between sky and sea for 50 km. However, its tight curves and single lane in each direction make it a challenge even for local drivers.

During peak season, traffic can be heavy and parking fees are very high. That’s why public transportation is the best solution for your vacation.

 Traveling by sea

Traveling by sea is the most evocative experience you can have. No traffic jams, just the sea breeze and a privileged view of the sheer cliffs.

Advantages: Speed, punctuality, and breathtaking photos from the open sea.

Connections and Companies:

Travelmar (to/from Amalfi, Salerno, Positano, Minori, Maiori, Cetara, Vietri sul Mare) – Service available year-round.

Alicost (to/from Amalfi, Positano, Sorrento, Capri, Ischia, Procida) – Service available from April to October.

Alilauro (to/from Amalfi, Salerno, Positano, Minori, Maiori, Cetara, Sorrento, Procida, Capri, Ischia) – Service available from April to October.

Bookings can be made online or at the ticket office at Molo Pennello in Amalfi (Lungomare dei Cavalieri).

Host’s tip

Arriving by train: Salerno station is just a 10-minute walk from the ferry dock (Molo Masuccio – Piazza della Concordia).

Getting around by bus: the Sita Sud network

If you prefer to stay on the mainland or want to reach inland villages like Ravello, Scala, or Agerola (famous for the Path of the Gods), choose the bus.

Main company: The SITA Sud line covers the entire area.

Where to buy tickets: You can buy them on board, although they are not always available. We recommend purchasing them in advance. In Amalfi, you can buy them at Bar Dejavù in Piazza Municipio.

We recommend downloading the UnicoCampania app. From there, you can purchase tickets directly on your smartphone.

If you plan to travel a lot, choose the day ticket (24 hours): it allows you unlimited on- and off-road travel on the entire Amalfi Coast network at a very advantageous fixed price.

Staying at our vacation home, you’ll be strategically located to take advantage of all these connections. Enjoy the spectacular Amalfi Coast; public transportation will take care of the rest!

We absolutely do not recommend renting cars or motorcycles. The SS163 is rugged and difficult to drive on, especially two-wheeled vehicles.
